DEPENDSWORTH IT as a sampler if you book small-group. SKIP if you came for the floating markets.
Quick answer
A Mekong day trip from Ho Chi Minh City is a sampler, not the delta. The flagship US$17 tour runs nine hours and yields about four hours on the ground, of which the signature sampan paddle is 10 to 15 minutes. If you care about the floating markets, you need two days and a night in Cần Thơ — the markets run from about 05:30, and Cần Thơ is three and a half to four hours away, so a day trip physically cannot reach one.
Book it
Why can't a day trip see a floating market?
Because the markets trade at dawn and the nearest real one is four hours from Saigon. You cannot leave the city in the morning and be on the water at 06:00.
This is the part the listings never say. Cái Răng, outside Cần Thơ, is the last major working floating market, and it is best between 05:30 and 07:00. Cần Thơ is roughly three and a half to four hours from the city. The arithmetic does not close. A day-trip photographer gets midday haze.
Worse, tours still sell markets that no longer exist. Cái Bè has been permanently closed since 2021 — bridge construction occupies the old site — yet products branded Cái Bè are still on sale. They visit canals and craft villages, which is a perfectly good day out, but it is not a market.
| Market | Status in 2026 | What is actually there |
|---|---|---|
| Cái Răng (Cần Thơ) | Operating, heavily diminished | About 200 vessels, under half the 1990s peak. Tourist boats often outnumber sellers. |
| Cái Bè (former Tiền Giang) | Permanently closed since 2021 | Bridge construction on the site. Tours using the name visit canals and craft villages. |
| Phong Điền (Cần Thơ) | Closed | Fewer than 12 boats. Off the tourist circuit. |
| Trà Ôn (Vĩnh Long) | Closed | Never reopened after the pandemic. |
| Ngã Năm (Sóc Trăng) | Moved onshore | Boat-to-boat trading gone. |
| Long Xuyên (An Giang) | Minimal | A handful of boats selling coffee and daily goods. |
The cause is not tourism. Better roads made trucks cheaper than boats, pandemic closures never reversed, and new flood walls on the Cần Thơ river went up without adequate piers for river trade. One vendor quoted in the reporting moves ten pineapples a day.

What does the standard day trip actually give you?
Nine hours for about four on the ground: a pagoda, a motorboat, a bee farm, a coconut-candy workshop, lunch, folk music and a short sampan paddle.
Memorise this itinerary — every budget tour is a permutation of it. Coach to Mỹ Tho, Vĩnh Tràng Pagoda, motorboat past the four islands, honey-bee farm with a royal-jelly upsell, coconut-candy workshop with a candy upsell, elephant-ear fish lunch, folk music with a tip basket, horse cart, sampan through the coconut canals, coach home.
- Vĩnh Tràng Pagoda — 30 minutes
- Motorboat on the Mekong — 15 minutes
- Village tour — 45 minutes
- Bến Tre, with lunch and activities — 2.5 hours
- Return transport — 1.5 hours

Under about twelve people and the reviews are warm. A coach of forty and they read as tourist-trap accounts. Price correlates with group size, so price is really a proxy for whether you will enjoy the day. Every 5.0-rated Mekong product we found is small-group and based in Bến Tre or Cần Thơ; every 4.7-rated one is a big-coach My Tho product.
Two documented warnings worth carrying: some stops keep snakes, peacocks and porcupines in small cages, which is not announced in advance, and sampan rowers on the budget circuit have been reported demanding a US$5-per-person tip before letting passengers off.
Which option should you book?
Two days with a night in Cần Thơ if you care about the markets. The US$17 coach tour if you have kids or a tight budget. The speedboat if you have money and no time. Nothing, if you are heading into the delta later in your trip.
| Option | Price | Time | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic coach day trip, Mỹ Tho and Bến Tre | from US$17 | 9 h | DEPENDS |
| Small-group day trip, under 12 people | US$25–59 | 6–7 h | WORTH IT |
| Les Rives speedboat, full day | US$125 | 8 h | WORTH IT if time-poor |
| Two days, one night in Cần Thơ | US$68–85 | 2 days | WORTH IT — the default |
| Skip it | — | — | WORTH IT if the delta is later in your trip |
The two-day tour is the recommendation we would give a friend. About US$68 to US$85 buys Cần Thơ, dawn at Cái Răng, and the delta actually breathing rather than performing. If you have 48 hours, it beats the day trip so decisively it should be the default.
The speedboat is the honest premium buy rather than a rip-off: it is listed on GetYourGuide and removes both 90-minute coach legs, which is the day's real misery, runs a genuine small group, and reaches canals the coaches cannot.
Routed by traveller
Families and budget travellers are well served by the cheap tour. Photographers and repeat visitors should skip it.
- First-timers with 3–4 days in the city — WORTH IT, if you book small-group or speedboat. Go in knowing it is a sampler.
- Families — WORTH IT. Kids love the boats, the horse cart and the candy factory, and the conveyor belt's weaknesses matter least to a nine-year-old.
- Budget backpackers — WORTH IT as pure arithmetic. US$17 for nine hours with transport, lunch, boats and a guide is unbeatable, provided you know it is a sales circuit.
- Photographers — SKIP the day trip, go two days. The one genuinely photogenic moment is Cái Răng between 05:30 and 06:30 and it is physically unreachable on a day trip.
- Repeat visitors who did the My Tho circuit before — SKIP. Nothing has been added and Cái Bè has been removed.
- Anyone continuing into the delta later — SKIP. You will see it properly in a few days.
Book the Mekong properly
The two-day Can Tho trip is the one we would actually book. All three platforms sell the delta; only one of them sells dawn at Cai Rang.
